Standard tuning (GDAE) works fine — the melody sits in first position. Old-time fiddlers often put D tunes like this one in a cross tuning such as ADae for extra open-string drones, but that's optional.

Old-time jam standard in D. The name (and the song it descends from) trace back to Stephen Foster's "Angelina Baker" (1850), but the instrumental circulates as its own traditional melody. Our ABC is a basic melody-only skeleton — expect plenty of variation between players.
